GCE Mathematics Aggregation Rules - Guidance for Higher Education Institutions is a very useful document for universities to be aware of and understand.

For example it explains that when grading Mathematics and Further Mathematics, the highest possible grade in Mathematics is awarded first so if AC and BB are both possible pairs of grades, AC will be given in preference to BB.
