News: NCETM grant scheme

The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics is making a grant scheme available to cover teacher research or teacher development projects associated with any aspect of mathematics teaching. It is anticipated that grants will, normally be linked to research about teaching approaches or to professional development innovation.

Approximately 30 grants will be available in each year and these will be awarded on two occasions mid-September and mid- January. Small grants are available for projects/research to be completed in a 15-month period. 2 Larger grants to be completed in 24 months. Grant applications will be considered on their own merits, their relationship to current or previous research and on their potential contribution to the development of excellence in mathematics teaching as identified in the NCETM vision statement.

The majority of grants will be awarded in the range of £3,000 to £5,000. These projects would be expected to produce some tangible outcomes, perhaps a video diary or magazine article linked to recommendations for changing practices for improvement. There are two larger grants per year of up to £25,000 available for significant projects. These grants will lead to a 5,000-word research report or similar to be disseminated at a National or International conference. The NCETM hopes that some of the grants will be awarded to group applications, where multiples of the grant can help encourage HEI involvement. For all grants it is anticipated that a significant proportion of the grant will be allocated to the involvement of recognised HEI researchers or research evaluators.
